President CSKA Andrei Vatutin explained that the resignation Emil Rajkovic from the position of head coach of the Moscow club was dictated by the need for urgent and serious changes in the team before the playoffs of the VTB United League.
CSKA announced Rajkovic’s resignation from the post of head coach of the team on Monday. The 45-year-old Greek Andreas Pistiolis became the new head coach.
“It was a difficult decision for us. First, because of the timing: It’s not very often that a team has to change head coaches just a week before the start of the playoffs. Secondly, we all developed excellent human and professional relationships with Emil. I have already said earlier that Raikovich approaches his work with great responsibility; he was in a difficult situation in terms of big changes at CSKA.
At the start of the season, expectations for our team’s performance were not too high. Also thanks to Raikovich’s efforts, we exceeded these expectations in the first part of the championship. But now, despite the fact that until the last round we fought for leadership in the very competitive regular championship of the VTB League, the results of the second round and, most importantly, the quality of the game do not suit either the club or the Fans.
Life has shown that the team needs urgent and serious changes. We will always treat Emil, like Marko Veličković and Sasho Todorovski, with kind feelings and the most sincere gratitude. I sincerely wish the coach and all his assistants good luck in their future work. And CSKA will continue to fight to achieve the highest goals,” Vatutin was quoted as saying by the club’s press service.
According to the results of the regular VTB United League championship, CSKA took third place; in the quarter-finals, the “reds and blues” will play with the “Yenisey” of Krasnoyarsk.
