Alexander Volkov: Any success for Ukraine is like a sip of water in the desert. Mykhailyuk’s championship is a historical fact that will remain in the history of Ukrainian basketball forever

The legend of domestic basketball believes that Svyatoslav’s success is “motivation for young people and prestige for Ukraine in this difficult time”

Legendary Ukrainian basketball player, honorary president of the Ukrainian Basketball Federation Alexander Volkov commented on the championship title NBA compatriot Svyatoslav Mikhailyukwhich he won as part of Boston Celtics.

“Of course, this is a historical fact. This will remain in the history of Ukrainian basketball forever, now we have two NBA champions, also in such teams as the Lakers and Boston. Mikhailyuk went through a relatively difficult path: college, where he entered a new culture young, but for the final two years in Kansas he was one of the team leaders. Then he got to the NBA… But now I wanted the coaches to trust him more, because he has enough talent and the opportunity to play more. But on a team like Boston, a championship team with an extremely talented roster, the competition is extremely high. There are a lot of strong players in his position, but he’s on the Celtics, he’s an NBA champion, and that’s very important.”

“I wish him nothing but luck in signing a new contract with Boston or another team in the league. But there is an alternative – strong European clubs, this option can also be considered. This is a question more for him, his agents, his family. I wanted him to find a place where he could show all his talents, having such a title that is scary to even dream about.”

“Any success for Ukraine now is like a sip of water in the desert. Any success gives hope and encourages young people who are starting their basketball journey or taking their first steps in other sports. Today we can already comprehend the path of the Saint – who he was, where he started, where he ended up and what he achieved. He has an incredible intermediate result – NBA champion, so many years in the league. This is an incentive and motivation for young people and prestige for Ukraine in this difficult time.”

Recall that Boston won its 18th title in franchise history. Mikhailyuk became the NBA champion for the first time in his career, and also the second Ukrainian after Stas Medvedenko with the championship title.

Svyatoslav played 49 games for the Celtics this season. In the playoff series, the Ukrainian averaged 1.0 points and 0.6 rebounds over eight games. During the season, the Ukrainian scored 4.0 points, 1.2 rebounds and 0.9 assists.

The Ukrainian can either stay in the NBA or leave the Celtics. In Europe, Euroleague clubs Panathinaikos and Real Madrid are interested in Mikhailyuk’s services.
