Hearn: We should have a third fight between Canelo and Golovkin, but Saul is desperate to fight Bivol

The Mexican has not yet activated the option of a rematch with Bivol

Promoter Eddie Hearn spoke about a possible third fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin. The manager noted that the Mexican would agree to a fight with GGG if after that he had a rematch with Dmitry Bivol.

“We will talk to Canelo on Monday to see what happens next. We know that there is a fight with Golovkin for the undisputed world super middleweight title trilogy in September. This is probably the only chance. We have to make this fight, but Canelo is desperate to fight Bivol,” Hearn said.

“I think Canelo will only fight Golovkin if he has a rematch with Bivol after that. So we will talk to him on Monday and make a decision. Until Canelo activated the option of a rematch with Bivol.”

“Canelo will either fight Golovkin in September or Dimitri Bivol. If the fight with Bivol is not next, then it will take place on the condition that Canelo passes GGG. In that case, we will give Dmitry another fight in October. We will then aim for a big rematch at Cinco de Mayo next year.”

“Honestly, the whole point of the Golovkin fight is that it’s now or never. For me, Canelo vs GGG is the biggest fight in boxing. This is a fight for the title of absolute world champion in the super middleweight division. There’s a lot of animosity between Alvarez and Golovkin and that’s another reason why I’d like to have this fight.”

In May, Canelo lost to Bivol for the WBA light heavyweight title by unanimous decision. After the fight, Alvarez announced his desire to have a rematch with the Russian.

The defeat from Bivol was the second in his career for the Mexican. The first he suffered in 2013, losing to Floyd Mayweather.

Alvarez and Golovkin had two fights. The first fight in 2017 ended in a draw, and a year later Canelo won by majority decision.
