President of the Russian Wrestling Federation (FSBR) Mikhail Mamiashvili in a conversation with , he said the Ukrainian government’s decision to boycott the competition if Russians are allowed in is an attempt to put pressure on the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
After the statement of the Ukrainian side, the IOC said that the decision to boycott competitions with the participation of Russians will only harm Ukrainian athletes.
– The IOC is the most powerful sports organization in the world, it unites all of humanity, but it is currently under enormous pressure. And a bunch of rabid senile people try to take advantage and interfere with them. They reproduce the evil, but even under the pressure of the CIO, they do not yield. The International Olympic Committee will continue to defend its fundamental values and, after the speeches of the Ukrainian government, it must draw certain conclusions.
The IOC has always been synonymous with rapprochement, friendship, because Russia has always been loved, loved and will be loved not only because we organize competitions at the highest level, but also for the atmosphere, friendliness and cordiality of our people. We went through stories with boycotts in 1980 and 1984, except for coaches, athletes and specialists, no one was hurt then. The IOC remembers this very well and shares a life-affirming position,” Mamiashvili told .
On March 28, the IOC Executive Committee announced recommendations for the admission of Russian athletes to international competitions. Recommendations include individual clearance, status neutrality, banning team sports, and banning athletes associated with security forces or who have expressed support for the CWO. A decision on the Paris 2024 Olympics will be taken “at the appropriate time”, said the IOC.
