Russian boxer Tarkhan Idigov admitted that he could finish his first fight at the World Championships in Tashkent in the first round, but the coaches recommended that he prolong the fight.
Saturday in Tashkent, Idigov defeated Abebe Yelisho of Ethiopia ahead of schedule and reached the 1/8 finals of his first world championship. In the second round, the knockdown was counted for the African, and already in the third round, the judge stopped the fight. In the next stage, Idigov, who competes in the weight class up to 67 kg, will face Nabi Iskandarov from Azerbaijan on May 9.
– I must admit that the opponent was weak, although he tried to deliver a strong blow, and my task was not to miss anything superfluous. I wanted to box more and breathe because there are four big fights in front of me. I was able to finish the fight in the first round, but the coach advised me to pick up speed, breathe and not “push” the opponent at the very beginning. My next opponent will be an Azerbaijani, against whom I lost in the final of the tournament in Morocco. Before the rematch, I plan to prepare well and be in top form,” the correspondent quoted Idigov as saying.
Later on Saturday, as part of the evening session, Gabil Mamedov (up to 63.5 kg) will be the first of the Russians to compete in the 1/8 finals, and Igor Sviridchenkov (up to 71 kg) will enter the ring in 1/16 finals. Watch the live broadcast of the evening session on “Match! Fighter”, start – 3:55 p.m. Moscow time.
