Former tennis player urged Ukrainian sports stars to be consistent
Former first racket of Ukraine Sergei Stakhovsky gave his assessment of the political actions of leading Ukrainian athletes against the backdrop of a full-scale Russian invasion.
The ex-tennis player focused on Alexandra Usikwho will hold his next fight in Saudi Arabia in August.
“About our athletes… Well, look, Lomachenko signed up for the defense, and Usyk once signed up. But, you know, you need to act consistently. After February 24, everyone made their choice, but, as they say, someone will be corrected by the grave. I am sorry that people with such a high name and reputation, who in reality could do a lot in terms of media, carry a message that is not understandable. It is not clear both there and here, ”explained Stakhovsky.
“This position blurs the boundaries, and it’s terrible. Look, Usyk will fight in Saudi Arabia. Has this country imposed at least one sanction against Russia? When I saw that they would fight in Saudi Arabia, I said that it was just a mockery. If people do not have enough intellect, there should be those who have this intellect near them. But not in this case.”
On August 20, in Saudi Jeddah, Usyk will hold a rematch against Anthony Joshua, in which he will defend four heavyweight championship titles for the first time.
After the start of the Russian invasion, Usyk joined the territorial defense detachment. Later, the Ukrainian decided to leave the country to prepare for the fight with Joshua.
The full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine continues for the 125th day.
