The WBC President intends to seek the appointment of six referees for the fight for the undisputed heavyweight title
WBC President Mauricio Suleiman said that he intends to seek the appointment of six judges for the fight for the title of absolute world heavyweight champion between the WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO champion Alexander Usik and WBC title holder Tyson Fury.
“The more highly qualified judges working together, the better. If you have a disagreement, the outcome of the battle is decided 2:1 on bad cards. If this happens in front of six judges, the correct fighter will win with a score of 4:2.”
“We’ve had too many split decisions and majority decision wins over the past few months. It is not normal”.
“It’s easy to say that the judges should be better when things go wrong, but why not bring in the six best judges in the world for a big championship fight like that—the judges who have been the most consistent—and let them decide those big fights? If not, we might end up judging someone who had a bad night or even personal problems.”
“Having three judges creates a very fine line between the right result and disaster. This is the biggest battle in history, and the controversy could be very destructive.”
The WBC proposes to reform the judges for the reporting fight, increasing their number to 5-6 people. The proposal has not yet been accepted by the Association of Boxing Commissions.
The unification fight between Usik and Fury was first scheduled for February 17, but due to Tyson’s injury it was postponed to May 18. The event will be hosted by Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The list of other fights that will take place as part of the boxing evening in Saudi Arabia is also known. Among them is the fight between Ukrainian Daniel Lapin and Portuguese Octavio Pudivitra for the WBA Continental light heavyweight title.
