‘My heart is broken’ – Italian boxer on fight with Algerian woman with high testosterone levels at Olympics

Italy’s Angela Carini said she was emotionally depressed after her defeat to Algeria’s Iman Khelif at the Paris Olympics.

On Thursday, Carini withdrew from her 66kg round of 16 fight against Khelif in the first round. The athlete complained in her corner that the punches were too painful from her opponent, who had high testosterone levels. In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Khelif from the World Championships in India for failing to meet eligibility criteria.

“I’m not here to judge anyone or pass judgment.” If an athlete behaves that way, it’s not up to me to decide whether it’s right or wrong.

I was just doing my job as a boxer. She went into the ring and fought. I did it with my head held high and my heart broken that I couldn’t go the last mile.

“My heart is broken because I am a fighter. My father taught me to be a warrior. I always entered the ring with honour and served my country with loyalty. But this time I couldn’t do it because I couldn’t fight anymore,” Carini said according to Sky Sports.

Boxing competitions at the Olympic Games are organized by a special unit created by the IOC. In June 2023, the IOC session expelled the IBA from the Olympic movement by a majority vote.

The Olympic Games in the French capital will end on August 11.
