Italian boxer Carini apologizes to Algerian athlete with high testosterone levels

Italian boxer Angela Carini apologized to the Algerian athlete Iman Khelif for an incident that occurred at the Paris Summer Olympics.

Carini refused on Thursday to continue her boxing match in the 1/8 finals in the weight category up to 66 kg against Algerian Iman Khelif at the 2024 Olympic Games. Carini fell to her knees and burst into tears in the ring. On Friday, it was announced that the Italian had decided to end her career.

In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Khelif and Lin Yuting (Taiwan) from the World Championships in India for failing to meet eligibility criteria. Following gender testing, the athletes were found to have XY chromosomes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) cleared them to compete in women’s competitions in 2024.

– All these arguments upset me. I also feel sorry for my opponent. If the IOC allowed her to fight, I respect that decision. I wasn’t going to not shake her hand. In fact, I want to apologize to her and to everyone. I was angry because my Olympics were ruined. I have nothing against Khelif. In fact, if I met her again, I would hug her,” Carini was quoted as saying by The Independent, citing La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Paris Olympics will end on August 11.
