Judoka Adamyan on Injuries: “Last Season I Digged Myself Into a Hole, Tournament After Tournament”

Judo World Champion Arman Adamian On , he said he plans to skip some tournaments in the new season to avoid damage.

The athlete noted that last season, due to his intensive participation in various international competitions, he was plagued by injuries.

— When you become world champion and you make a mistake somewhere in a tournament, you think it’s an accident. Then you don’t think soberly about the situation, but just think that you can do it in the next tournament. And so, tournament after tournament, you dig yourself into a hole, and everything only gets worse.

You could say that I didn’t even control this period, I struggled here and there. Now I’m starting a new season and I already understand perfectly how to weigh everything and make decisions. Somewhere, maybe I’ll miss it [турниры]”Somewhere I will fight. That is, I will approach all this with a sober and cool head,” Adamyan said in a special report by Maria Vasilyeva “New Horizons” on .

In late June, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed four Russian judokas to compete in the Paris Summer Olympics as neutrals. The list included Elis Startseva, Valery Endovitsky, Dali Liluashvili, and Makhmadbek Makhmadbekov. Adamyan earned the necessary ranking points to compete in the 2024 Olympics, but was not included in the list. In total, the Russian team had 12 quotas for participation in the Games: 7 for men and 5 for women. The President of the Russian Judo Federation (RDF), Sergei Soloveichik, later announced that Russian judokas would not compete in the 2024 Games.

“Right now, there are no thoughts in my head. Empty, you don’t think about anything. I could win any of these medals, it’s 100%. On the one hand, it’s offensive, on the other hand, you think: ‘What can I do? That’s it! The sooner you let go of this situation and accept it, the easier it will be for you to continue living and training.

Everyone withdraws in their own way: some need to communicate more, others, on the contrary, do not want to talk at all and withdraw into themselves. It’s individual here. I didn’t want to talk to anyone, I withdrew into myself,” Adamyan said.

In March 2023, the IOC Executive Committee recommended to international federations that, if Russians are admitted to competitions, they should do so individually, in a neutral status, without participating in team events, and also exclude the participation of athletes associated with law enforcement and who have expressed support for the SVO.

Adamyan is 27 years old, he is an Honored Master of Sports of Russia, world champion (2023) and European champion (2021) in judo, as well as winner of the European Games.
