Russian Vsevolod Shumkov said that, thanks to his physical abilities, he would be able to defeat the 2019 world and Asian champion Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov of Uzbekistan in a fight for the IBA title in the weight category up to 57 kg.
The fight for the IBA belt between Shumkov and Mirzakhalilov will be the headliner of the IBA Night of Champions tournament, which will be held on Saturday in Baku. The 2024 European champion, 2023 World Championship bronze medalist, three-time Russian champion Shumkov has one official fight in the professional ring – in November 2023, the Russian defeated Garik Gevorkyan ahead of schedule. Shumkov, 22, is participating in the IBA Night of Champions series; in February, he defeated Cuban Seidel Horta in a challenger fight. Mirzakhalilov, 29, has four victories in the professional ring (3 by KO). In February, an Uzbek boxer defeated Mexican Luis Rodriguez Ocana in another fight for the IBA belt.
— We are approaching the fight, only the last moments remain, so there is no stage fright. But it should seem closer to the fight, because I think it is normal. I have already understood well that Olympic and professional boxing are completely different fields. But I had already fought 10 rounds in the contenders’ fight and I felt pretty good over the entire distance. And now I am perfectly prepared for the championship confrontation. If we talk about the differences, I like the fact that in professional boxing you weigh yourself once and have a day to recover before the fight. But this does not happen in amateurs – daily weigh-ins, like fights.
I watched his fights. Compared to me, he throws fewer punches – they are simple, but hard. He moves and tries to throw simple and accentuated blows. I think that motor skills and physics will overcome and overwhelm all this. “I am perfectly prepared and confident in my abilities,” Shumkov said, whose words to were provided by the press service of the Russian Boxing Federation.
In addition, Shumkov, a three-time national champion, said he would miss the Russian Championship, which begins on October 2 in Irkutsk.
The tournaments of the “Night of IBA Champions” series are broadcast live on and Match! Combattant.
