On September 21, in a fight at Wembley, Daniel Dubois knocked out Anthony Joshua in the fifth round
Famous trainer Teddy Atlas commented on the possible rematch between the IBF world heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois (22-2, 21 KO) and former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs).
“Anthony Joshua has been in boxing for a long time. He was a champion, he suffered defeats, he came back, he was a gold medalist, he is loved in his home country. AJ has earned the right to make his own decision about the rematch. If Anthony Joshua wants a rematch right away, then he is experienced enough to do it. That doesn’t mean he hasn’t been down this road before.”
“He went through this journey with Andy Ruiz. He didn’t stop there. He made changes, came back and won. If this is what Anthony Joshua chooses, what he wants to do and what he believes in, then yes, he should take revenge.”
“Can he beat Dubois in a rematch? This is a difficult question. We already know that Dubois is strong, big and can hit, but we didn’t know how strong he was mentally, how he gained confidence and believed in himself. He can do the most important thing a fighter can do in a fight – overcome it psychologically.”
Let us remember that on September 21 in London, Dubois defeated Joshua. Daniel knocked down AJ three times and knocked out his opponent in the fifth round. Dubois defended the IBF title, which he received after Oleksandr Usyk abandoned it.
The Joshua-Dubois fight set a new record for the largest number of spectators in the 21st century for a boxing match. The boxing evening at Wembley Stadium in London was attended by 98,128 people.
AJ’s promoter Eddie Hearn previously stated that the fight contract included a rematch option. However, Bob Arum denied this statement, calling it “fiction.” Dubois coach Don Charles believes his player should prepare thoroughly for any upcoming opponent.
Subsequently, the chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, Turki Al al-Sheikh, said that a rematch between Dubois and Joshua could take place on February 22 in Riyadh. The fight could take place as part of the “5 on 5” event between Queensberry Promotions and Matchroom Boxing, which was previously announced by Al ash-Sheikh in February.
