Ukrainian boxer is sure that there is no “sport outside of politics”
Former World Light Heavyweight Champion Alexander Gvozdyk stated that sport has always been used in the interests of politics.
“Everyone always says that sport is out of politics, but in fact it has never been so. It seems to me that sport is a very powerful weapon to influence people. If the audience looks at outstanding athletes, then, of course, they will lean towards their opinion. Therefore, sports and religion are all instruments of influence, in my opinion. Of course, sport is used as a weapon in political moments.”
“Regarding the issue of Crimea, in my opinion, Usyk is now the most popular sportsman from Ukraine. Who else? Probably, some footballers, but he is constantly heard, people follow him. This is a hot question in Ukraine, which is why they ask him.”
Earlier, Gvozdyk announced his intention to resume his professional career and return to the ring. The Ukrainian stressed that there are already dates for a possible fight.
Gvozdyk became world champion in 2018 by defeating Adonis Stevenson. After that, Alexander had one successful title defense.
Gvozdyk retired in the summer of 2020. The Ukrainian fought his last fight in the fall of 2019, losing to Artur Beterbiev by technical knockout in the tenth round.
