The American believes that Roberto Garcia did not take into account the specifics of heavyweight
Ex-champion in several weight categories American Roy Jones said that Anthony Joshua (24-3, 22 KOs) lost in rematch with WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (20-0, 13 KOs) due to a misunderstanding with his coach Robert Garcia.
“Garcia was trying to change something. But I think that Joshua did not understand what was wanted from him, and it was not explained to him properly.
“I didn’t feel that his changes would be good, because Garcia is a small guy who taught AJ to fight a big one. I didn’t want to watch the second fight because I didn’t want to lose hope that Joshua could beat Usyk. My plan for Usyk’s victory is the same plan that Garcia had, but taking into account the fact that the opponent is tall.
“I think it was very difficult for him to explain to Joshua how and what to do – Joshua is a tall guy and Usyk is a tall guy. It is difficult for a short guy to explain what he himself has never had to do. I’m short, but I had to deal with any opponents.
“I went from junior middleweight to heavyweight. No one has ever done this in the history of the sport. My experience is somewhat different from Garcia’s. I understand what Garcia’s plan was, but sometimes different backgrounds, different ways of explaining – sometimes it all gets in the way. I don’t think he could formulate his plan for Joshua so that he understood everything.”
Earlier, Roy Jones said that he could become Joshua’s coach. Roy Jones is currently training British boxer Chris Eubank Jr.
Note that in 2015, Roy Jones received Russian citizenship, and also visited the occupied Crimea.
In August, Joshua lost by split decision to Ukrainian boxer, WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.
AJ wants to enter the ring in his next fight with Dillian Whyte. The fight could take place if White wins over Jermain Franklin. White’s fight with Franklin will take place on December 26 in London.
