Coach Tsurenko: Not a single Belarusian, not a single Russian woman spoke out against the war in a year

Lesya was unable to enter the court due to hysteria

Physical training coach Lesya Tsurenko Nikita Vlasov spoke about the situation with his ward at the tournament in Indian Wells before the game with the representative of Belarus Arina Sobolenko and subsequent WTA statements.

“It’s not specifically about Sobolenko, but about the fact that you need to play against the representative of Belarus – the aggressor country. All players from this country theoretically support the war in Ukraine. Why theoretically? Because they have never supported our country, they have not called for stopping the killing of civilians, they have not called for the withdrawal of troops. Everyone is silent, because everything suits them. They play, earn money, there are no sanctions. The behavior of these girls is akin to supporting the war.”

“If they were banned, forbidden to play, then maybe they would have spoken out. But now, when there are no restrictions, but just removed the flag, why complain? Everything is fine with them, but what is happening in Ukraine does not concern them. Not a single Belarusian, not a single Russian woman spoke out against the war in a year. Accordingly, we conclude that they support this whole nightmare.”

“So, I repeat, if instead of Sobolenko there was another representative of Belarus or the same Russia, Lesia would have had exactly the same emotions.”

“With your silence, you support the regime of a state that attacks or helps to attack Ukraine. No one forbids even in personal conversations to tell Ukrainians that they are against the war, but no one has done this for a year. What does it say? It is easier for them to remain silent, to agree with what is happening. I would compare this behavior with the following situation: if you walk down the street and see a crime, but did nothing to prevent it, you automatically become an accomplice. The same is true in the issue of supporting Ukraine.”

“You see that there is a war going on, that civilians are dying, but at the same time, even in a personal conversation, you cannot express support. So you are for the war.

In Indian Wells, a few minutes before the start of the meeting against Sobolenko, the Ukrainian refused to play “for personal reasons.” Lesya said that Steve Simon said that if players from Russia and Belarus support the war, then this is only their own opinion. The functionary also expressed confidence that the Russians would be allowed to the Olympics following the example of tennis tournaments, despite the war they unleashed.
