New Premier League rules ban human rights abusers from owning league clubs

A person who has committed human rights abuses will not be able to own or manage a Premier League football club under new rules approved by the league the day before.

Human rights violations based on the Global Human Rights Sanctions Regulations will be part of a series of additional ‘disqualifying events’ under the enhanced club owner and manager test.

The new rules approved by the clubs also mean that a person or company subject to UK government sanctions will be disqualified. The list of criminal offenses that can result in disqualification has been expanded to include crimes related to violence, corruption, fraud, tax evasion and hate crimes.
