Spanish Football Federation suspends referee Villanueva from VAR for life

The referee made a mistake in the game Real Madrid with Valencia

Royal Spanish Football Federation, together with the Committee of Arbitrators, decided to suspend the arbitrator from work with VAR for life Iglesias Villanueva.

In the match of the 35th round of the championship of Spain, Valencia – Real (1: 0), Villanueva did not show all the necessary angles of the controversial episodes to the chief referee of the match, Ricardo De Burgos Bengoechee. The judging committee will also reportedly purge the ranks and fire several referees.

The Bat-Blancos match was remembered for the racist scandal against Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior. In the middle of the second half, there was a pause in the game for several minutes due to insults against the Brazilian. And in stoppage time, Vinicius received a red card for punching an opponent in the face.

The player himself said that “previously, La Liga belonged to Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Cristiano and Messi, but now it has been swallowed up by racism.” Vinicius also stressed that he will continue to fight racism in Spain.

In turn, La Liga launched its own investigation and requested all materials from the game between Real and Valencia. In case of identified violations, the organization undertook to take appropriate legal measures.

The Madrid Club has approached the Prosecutor General’s Office regarding this situation. The Blancos also intend to achieve a clear and private trial of the case with a fair punishment for the perpetrator. Valencia also began its own investigation: the club’s management condemned the manifestation of racism.

Real Madrid are in third place in La Liga, one point behind Atlético Madrid. Valencia moved up to 13th position in the standings after beating the Blancos, extending their lead from the relegation zone to five points.
