During his football career, Claude Makelele played for Chelsea from 2003 to 2008. He played 217 matches for the London club, scoring two goals and providing six assists. Makelele also managed to play for PSG, Real Madrid, Celta, Olympique Marseille, Nantes and Brest.

In 2011, Makelele ended his playing career and immediately began coaching. The Frenchman was assistant to PSG head coach Carlo Ancelloti, and also managed Bastia and Belgian side Eupen.
