Former midfielder was world champion with England and Manchester United idol; club mourns death of Bobby Charlton
Legend of Manchester United, Sir Bobby Charlton He died this Saturday, 21, at the age of 86. The former player was champion of the 1966 World Cup with the English team. The death was confirmed in a statement released by the family.

Sir Bobby Charlton built most of his career at United. At the club, the former midfielder played 758 games, scored 249 goals and won three English Championship titles, one European Champions Cup (currently the Champions League) and one FA Cup.
He was diagnosed with dementia in 2020, the same year his older brother, Jack Charltonalso an English football idol, died after suffering from the same diagnosis and battling lymphoma.
At Old Trafford, Bobby Charlton named one of the stadium’s stands after him. He was one of the survivors of the Munich air tragedy, which killed eight club players in a plane crash in Germany in 1958.
“Manchester United is mourning the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest and most beloved players in our club’s history,” says the Manchester United statement.
“Sir Bobby was a hero to millions of people, not just in Manchester or the UK, but everywhere in the world where football is played. He was admired as much for his sportsmanship and integrity as for his outstanding qualities as a football player; Sir Bobby will always be remembered as a giant of the game,” regretted the club.
The former player played every minute of England’s title campaign in 1966. In that edition, he scored three goals, two in the semi-final against Portugal. Geoff Hurstnow, is the only world champion with England alive.
Ballon d’Or winner in the same year, Bobby Charlton is one of nine players to win the individual award, Champions League and World Cup. The feat was also achieved by Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, Paolo Rossi, Zidane, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaká and Lionel Messi.
