Athletistic/Football. The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has fined the Lithuanian Football Federation (LFF) over an offensive song sung by a group of supporters against Vladimir Putin.

Lithuanian fans insulted the Russian president during the qualifying match for the 2024 European Championship between the national teams of Lithuania and Serbia, which took place on September 10 in Kaunas. The match ended with the victory of the Serbian team with a score of 3:1.

Lithuanian Football Federation President Edgaras Stankevicius stressed that the LFF had never been fined for such behavior, but this time a delegate from Kazakhstan was present at the match. The LFF contacted UEFA with a request.

UEFA fined the LFF for “provocative and offensive language,” the organization said. Stankevicius pointed out that sanctions had been imposed for the first time for this chant and expressed bewilderment at the decision, considering it somewhat strange. He also stressed that most European countries share similar values and that sanctions imposed on someone who expresses his own position seem unreasonable to him.
