UEFA launches program to tackle racist abuse of online gamers

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) will launch a program to combat racist insults towards football players on the Internet, reports the organization on its official website.

– The special program aims to take concrete action to prevent abusive behavior and online discrimination at all final competitions, including the youth, women’s and men’s finals, over the next three years. UEFA works directly with major social media platforms to ensure harmful content is removed.

The program kicks off during the European Women’s Championship (July 6-31) and will work to “actively monitor, report and address” cases of online abuse.

A report released by the International Football Federation (FIFA) last month showed that more than half of players at the last European Championship and Africa Cup of Nations experienced discriminatory harassment online.

England’s Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka have been the target of racist abuse online after failing to take penalties against Italy in a penalty shootout in the UEFA Euro 2020 final .
