An arbitration with controversies and errors by Roberto Tobar condemns River Plate in Copa Libertadores

The Chilean referee relied on VAR to cancel a goal against the Millionaires and then did not award a possible penalty to Diego Godín, when the game expired and the elimination of Marcelo Gallardo’s team been consolidated.

It was not a good evening for Roberto Tobar in Copa Libertadores. The Chilean referee was the star of the duel between River Plate and Vélez Sarsfield and a high caliber duel was expected, as the millionaires lost in the first leg due to the minimum score.

And as expected, River came out with everything to find the goal that would lead him to balance the key and then look for the classification on the court or through the twelve stages. But the conquest did not come and the visit showed its arguments, making Red member Paulo Díaz shine in the last line.

However, Marcelo Gallardo would touch the board and in the second half he made several changes to leave the points at the Monumental stadium. And when the duel seemed to end at zero and the legs didn’t give way, Ezequiel Barco made an excellent play and his cross was connected on the goal line by Matías Suárez. It was a local goal. It was the 78th minute, it was the hope of one of the most powerful teams in America.

But Tobar said no. Or rather the VAR, made up of Brazilians, because he called the Chilean judge to tell him that there was a possible hand from the author of the goal and asked him to examine it. After long minutes and a series of repetitions which never made it possible to know if there was a hand, the national referee decided to cancel the conquest.

Unfortunately for Santiago’s referee, the troubles didn’t stop there. In discounts, when River desperately wanted to open the account, Diego Godín jumps with Lucas Beltrán and appears to elbow the ram, but nothing is loaded. And Tobar gives up again, despite the fact that at least in one of the moves in the game the foul can be seen. Although not violent, it is collectible. The VAR didn’t even invite him to review the footage.

For the same, all the members of the millionaire team passed him, when the draw to zero was condemned and with it, the elimination of one of the constant animators of the continental tournament. But the claims were no longer of any use and we just have to wait for what Conmebol says about the Chilean’s performance.
