England will allow standing room again in stadiums 28 years later

Nigel Huddleston, the English government’s sport minister, has confirmed that standing room will be allowed in stadiums from the new Premier League season.

Since 1994, standing has been banned in England. This move was prompted by the Hillsborough Stadium tragedy in Sheffield. On April 15, 1989, in the FA Cup semi-final match between Nottingham Forest and Liverpool, there was a stampede in which 97 supporters died.

Last season, special fencing was introduced in five stadiums in test mode in front of certain areas of the stands.

“Only clubs that adhere to strict security measures will be granted clearance. Security is paramount and we are working with clubs on this. Fans deserve different viewing options,” the Minister said.
