The organization does not approve of fights in the format of 12 rounds and three minutes
Puerto Rican Amanda Serrano announced she was relinquishing her WBC featherweight title.
The champion stated that she does not intend to retain the title of an organization that does not work for the development of boxing. Please note that the WBC does not advocate women’s fights consisting of 12 rounds or rounds lasting three minutes.
“I like boxing. I gave my life to this sport. No phone, no boyfriend, no parties. Only boxing. I am the only boxer, regardless of gender, from Puerto Rico to become an undisputed champion. “I am the only female boxer to have won titles in seven divisions.”
“I am the first absolute champion who fought in the format of 12 rounds of three minutes. If a sanctioning body is not willing to give me and my colleagues the choice to fight just like men, then I will not fight for that sanctioning body. The WBC refused to develop the sport for the sake of equality. So I’m relinquishing their title.”
In October, Serrano defended her WBA, IBF and WBO featherweight titles against Brazilian Ramos. The unprecedented fight consisted of 12 rounds of three minutes each. Previously, women’s championship bouts were limited to ten two-minute rounds.
35-year-old Serrano is a record holder in professional boxing, she is the only woman to become a champion in seven weight categories.
