Ter Stegen successfully undergoes back surgery

The goalkeeper could return for the Champions League knockout stages

Goalkeeper Barcelona Marc-Andre Ter Stegen successfully underwent back surgery.

The German’s recovery period will be up to three months. There is a possibility that Marc-Andre will be ready for the first leg of the 1/8 finals of the Champions League.

Let us remind you that during the international break Ter Stegen suffered a back injury. Conservative treatment did not bring the expected result, so surgical intervention became the preferred option.

The possibility of continuing recovery without surgery was also considered, which would mean a pause of several weeks, but there would still be a risk of relapse. The operation is guaranteed to mean that the goalkeeper will miss more than six weeks. In the last matches, reserve goalkeeper Iñaki Pena played in Barcelona’s goal.

The Blaugrana, meanwhile, are already looking for a short-term replacement for Ter Stegen. It has been reported that the club is considering signing ex-Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea in the winter transfer window.

Ter Stegen has been playing for Barcelona since 2014. At the end of the summer, he extended his contract with the club until 2028.

The 31-year-old goalkeeper has 17 games in all competitions this season. The German missed 15 goals and kept eight clean sheets.

Barcelona is in third place in La Liga. Xavi’s team also secured the Champions League playoffs.
