At the last minute: Argentina avoids Paraguay’s qualification for the Olympics

The Albirroja beat the Albiceleste, in the last home run of the Pre-Olympics, and certified their qualification for Paris 2024. However, in added time, Mascherano’s team found the score 3-3. The Guaraníes are leading this round, followed by Brazil. The competition ends on Sunday.

Nothing was missing for real success in the Pre-Olympic Venezuela since a selection which was not among the candidates certified its presence at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. In Caracas, Paraguay was one minute away from making history and returning to the men’s football competition at the biggest sporting event after 20 years (since Athens 2004).

They came up against Argentina and led twice Javier Mascherano’s Albiceleste found the tie 3-3 in the epilogue. The victory placed the Guarani in the event of the five rings, but this achievement was postponed to the last day of the final quadrangular, where the two qualifiers of the Conmebol will be determined.

Pablo Solari opened the account for the Argentines within 3 minutes of the match. Before the break, Diego Gómez equalized (42nd). In addition, Alan Núñez made it 2-1 for the Paraguayans (71st). While the roads were closed to the transandines, a penalty against Luciano Gondou allowed an unbeatable option. Thiago Almada executed in the 84th minute to make it 2-2.

Then, in the 90′, Enso González made it 3-2, which left Albirroja on the verge of victory and qualification, since they had beaten Brazil in the first meeting. But in added time, Federico Redondo, son of Fernando Redondo (former Real Madrid midfielder), made it 3-3.

“We knew it would be a very difficult match. We were a stone’s throw from Paris. The good thing is that we continue to depend on ourselves,” said Enso González, one of the scorers for Carlos Jara Saguier’s team.

In the underlying duel, Brazil beat Venezuela 2-1, which allows him to add his first units in the final phase. Mauricio made it 1-0 for Canarinha in the 57th minute. Later, Jovanny Bolívar equalized for Vinotinto in the 67th minute. And in the 88th minute, Guilherme Biro declared victory for the Brazilians.

Thus, the final phase of the Pre-Olympics is led by Paraguay with 4 points, followed by Brazil with 3. Following two ties, Argentina only has 2 points, while Venezuela finishes with 1. This Sunday, the tournament ends and the South American classic between Argentinians and Brazilians will take place. The Albiceleste must win. Otherwise, he won’t go to France. Paraguay depends on itself: if it overtakes the Venezuelans, it gets tickets.
