The Catalan club cannot win in three rounds in a row
Girona in a productive match of the 25th round of the Spanish Examples lost on the road Athletics – 2:3.
The Basques opened the scoring in the very opening after a blunder by the opposing team – Aleix Garcia made an inaccurate cross pass near his own penalty area. Until the end of the half, Girona had nothing except an inaccurate shot from Viktor Tsygankov, who, like another Ukrainian Artem Dovbik, came out from the first minutes.
Immediately after the break, Victor achieved his goal – he played ahead after Ivan Martin’s cross. This goal was the 26-year-old winger’s fifth in 24 matches this season. Tsygankov also has three assists.
Athletic reacted very quickly – and after 11 minutes they already led by two goals. Again there was a fatal mistake in defense – this time defender Miguel Gutierrez gave the ball to the opponent. Alejandro Berenguer scored a double. Four minutes later, the same Gutierrez could not hold back Iñaki Williams, who shot past Paulo Gassaniga with a precise shot.
The guests did not give up and were able to pull one goal back in the 75th minute – Eric Garcia scored the ball into the goal from close range after a set piece. Michel’s team had a chance to avoid defeat. In one case, after Dovbik’s shot, a ricochet intervened and the ball went for a corner.
Girona missed its best chance in the 90+5 minute – Savio’s output was neutralized by goalkeeper Unai Simon, and after finishing off Juanpe, defender Daniel Vivian cleared the ball from the goal line.
Girona, having scored only a point in the last three rounds, retained second place, but allowed their neighbors from Barcelona to come within two points. Athletic is the same amount behind Atlético, which is in fourth place.
In the next round, the team of Tsygankov and Dovbik will take on Rayo Vallecano. Ernesto Valverde’s team will play away against Betis.
