The Spanish Football Federation has suspended two senior officials over allegations in the Rubiales affair.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has decided to dismiss from their positions the sports director of the national team, Albert Luque, and the director of the marketing department, Ruben Rivera, reports Marca.

The two specialists are under investigation in a case in which the main accused is the former president of the RFEF, Luis Rubiales. The decision to suspend Luque and Rivera came after prosecutors requested a year and a half in prison for each of them. For the moment, Luque and Rivera are suspended from any activity related to the national team and the federation.

Albert Luque is a famous former footballer who played for Deportivo, Newcastle and Ajax. He also has 16 caps for the Spanish national team.

In August 2023, the Spanish women’s team won the world title for the first time in its history at a tournament held in Australia and New Zealand. Rubiales, then director of the RFEF, kissed soccer player Jennifer Hermoso on the lips during the awards ceremony after the final match. The footballer later said she was rude and “did not consent to the kiss.”

Rubiales was suspended from football activities for 90 days and subsequently left his position at the RFEF. Subsequently, the International Football Federation (FIFA) suspended the 46-year-old Spanish official from his football activities for three years. Earlier in March, prosecutors requested 2.5 years in prison for Rubiales for “sexual assault and coercion.”
