The former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation was in the Dominican Republic. After landing, police detained him to make statements as part of the investigation into alleged irregularities in several contracts awarded during his tenure.
ANDFormer president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, was arrested upon his return to Spain in the morning of this Wednesday at the Adolfo Suárez-Madrid Barajas airport after anticipating his return from the Dominican Republic.
Agents from the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard waited for him on the tarmac of the premises and took him as a detainee to the police headquarters in a van.
There, they informed him of his accusation in Operation Brody and released him while waiting for the competent judge to summon him to testify in the coming days. .
Rubiales is under investigation for a series of alleged irregularities in several contracts awarded during his tenure at the RFEF, allegedly crimes related to commercial corruption, unfair administration, money laundering and to membership in a criminal organization.
Although his arrival in Spain is scheduled for next Saturday April 6, Rubiales has decided to bring forward his return to the country.
Among the contracts signed under his administration is the award of a total amount of 900,000 euros to the construction company Gruconsa for the renovation of the La Cartuja stadium, where the Hispanic team plays its home matches.
It is worth remembering that on March 20 The UCO arrested seven businessmen and lawyers allegedly linked to the plot. Among them was Tomás González Cueto, Rubiales’ trusted man and external legal advisor to the Federation during the period of the contracts examined. .
Agents planned to arrest Rubiales the same day, but the arrest did not take place while the former RFEF president was in the Dominican Republic. Regardless, investigators searched his residence, where several electronic devices were seized.
In addition, this operation is linked to the complaint filed in June 2022 against Rubiales and former Barcelona footballer Gerard Pique for alleged crimes of commercial corruption and unfair administration.
This complaint was presented by Miguel Ángel Galán, director of the National Center for the Training of Football Coaches (CENAFE) and underlines the commissions received by the RFEF and Piqué’s company for having played the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia .
