With the score 4:0, the Chelsea players decided to argue which of them should take the penalty kick
Head coach Chelsea Mauricio Pochettino reacted to an episode in the second half of his team’s match against Everton (6:0), when the Blues players argued which of them should take the penalty.
“It’s a shame. This is a process for a young team that has a lot to learn. I told the player about this after the game. This is the last time I want to see something like this. I want to apologize to the fans.”
“Next time this happens, we must have a clear understanding. They need to study and be professionals. We must focus on the team. They knew Cole had to take the shot. Cole is a penalty taker. This is a clear example that we are still in the learning process,” the Argentine emphasized.
The scandalous episode happened in the 63rd minute of yesterday’s match, when Chelsea were awarded a penalty with the score 4:0. Within seconds, Cole Palmer (who had already scored three times) and Noni Madueke were brought down in the Everton penalty area. The latter tried to challenge the right to take the 11-meter kick as a foul (later it became clear that the penalty was awarded precisely for the violation on Palmer). Forward Nicholas Jackson also entered the fray.
As a result, Conor Gallagher had to intervene in the situation as captain. Palmer (a full-time penalty taker) confidently converted the penalty kick and scored his 20th goal in the championship, equaling Erling Haaland in this indicator. Cole also became the first Chelsea player since March 2010 to score four goals in a single Premier League match, and the fifth youngest player in the League to score at least four goals in a single match.
Palmer himself said after the match that the quarrel was “exaggerated”, and the players themselves then laughed and joked about it.
Chelsea are in ninth place, but due to the lost points they can qualify for the European Cup zone. In the next round, the Blues will play in an away derby against Arsenal. Before that, on April 20, Mauricio Pochettino’s team will meet Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals.
