The PSG forward speaks about his team’s relegation from the Champions League and the results of the season
PSG striker Kylian Mbappe commented on his team’s defeat in the confrontation with Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League semi-finals, and also assessed his actions in two matches, in each of which the Parisians lost to the Bumblebees.
“We should have scored. We had opportunities, but when you don’t score it’s difficult to advance to the next round. But don’t speak only in a negative way. The team really tried and did everything to reach the finals. Alas, this was not enough. Now we will have to focus on the French Cup final against Lyon. This trophy is also very important.”
According to Mbappe, defeats against Borussia should not be attributed solely to bad luck. “You have to respect your opponent. But, in my humble opinion, we were superior to Borussia in every match. Of course, everyone will analyze everything later, but the truth is that the opponent reached our penalty area several times in two matches and scored two goals, we did not take advantage of a lot of chances. I don’t like to talk about bad luck. When you’re good enough, you don’t hit the post, you hit the goal. We weren’t good enough.”
The Parisian forward also assessed his actions in the confrontation with Borussia.
“I tried very hard. But this was not enough. I’m the guy who has to score goals and be a leader. When it works, I take all the credit. When it doesn’t work, you have to take away the criticism. There’s no problem with that. The first one to blame is me.”
However, Mbappe believes that PSG has a good future. “If we sum up the interim results, taking into account the construction of a new project with young players, the season is not so bad. At PSG we want to win. We are very sad now. But I repeat: we need to win the French Cup, then we will draw the results. It doesn’t make any sense now.”
PSG lost both semi-final matches of the Champions League to Borussia with the same score – 0:1. The Parisian club became the champion of France ahead of schedule, and will play Lyon in the final of the French Cup on May 25.
Mbappe has played 46 matches for PSG in all competitions this season, scoring 43 goals and providing 10 assists. With a high degree of probability, this is the forward’s last season in Paris. Mbappe is expected to move to Real Madrid in the summer.
