The promoter reacted to the potential deprivation of the Ukrainian IBF belt
Frank Warrenpromoter of the former WBC title holder Tyson Furysaid that the Briton is ready to have a rematch with the absolute world heavyweight champion Alexander Usik even if all the belts are not on the line.
“I hope all the belts are on the line, but what’s important is that the first fight was so great. This is the best fight in the heavyweight division, all the belts were on the line. This was an amazing 21st century fight. So now we want to see another fight. People want to see it again. A very close fight. Everyone has an opinion, which is great because it adds spice.”
“Even if they fought without belts at all, would you watch this fight? The rematch will take place. It was agreed upon and announced. Tyson has already won all the belts. For him, the main thing is not titles, but revenge,” the promoter said.
On the night of May 19, Usik inflicted the first defeat of Fury in his professional career in a fight that took place at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). The victory was awarded to the Ukrainian by a split decision: 115-112, 113-114 and 114-113.
Usik became the first absolute world heavyweight champion in the era of four belts. In the heavyweight division, the last time Lennox Lewis held absolute status was in 1999, but then three titles were enough for this title.
It was reported that an agreement had been reached between Usyk and Fury for a re-fight. The “Gypsy King” has officially activated the rematch option. The second fight between Usik and Fury will take place on December 21, 2024 in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia).
Usyk should defend his IBF title next in line for championship belts. Due to the rematch with Fury, the mandatory defense is once again postponed. The IBF created an “interim” title, which was won by Britain’s Daniel Dubois by defeating Croatia’s Filip Hrgovic.
