Former world champion Nelson: Until Usyk retires, I don’t see Fury fighting

The rematch between the absolute world champion and the “Gypsy King” is scheduled for December 21

Former cruiserweight world champion and now sports analyst, Johnny Nelson spoke about a rematch between the former WBC title holder Tyson Fury and absolute world heavyweight champion Alexander Usik.

“Until Usyk retires, I don’t see Tyson Fury fighting. What happened the first time they had to box? The fight was postponed. Tyson is the boss, it doesn’t matter what his PR people say, Tyson is the boss, so if he says he won’t box, he doesn’t care about the consequences.”

“I’m basing it on the impact it will have on him mentally and emotionally. He will think, I did everything right, what else can I do?

“I know how fighters think, and I know what happens in the gym. You can tell how it affects him and how the fighter handles the situation. You may notice that in the lead up to the fight and during the fight itself, three people do blah blah blah. It was everyone else’s nerves and panic that got to him.”

On the night of May 19, Usik inflicted the first defeat of Fury in his professional career in a fight that took place at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). The victory was awarded to the Ukrainian by a split decision: 115-112, 113-114 and 114-113.

Usik became the first absolute world heavyweight champion in the era of four belts. In the heavyweight division, the last time Lennox Lewis held absolute status was in 1999, but then three titles were enough for this title.

Let us remind you that the “Gypsy King” has officially activated the revenge option. The second fight between Usik and Fury will take place on December 21, 2024 in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia).

Usyk should defend his IBF title next in line for championship belts. Due to the rematch with Fury, the mandatory defense is once again postponed. The IBF created an “interim” title, which was won by Britain’s Daniel Dubois by defeating Croatia’s Filip Hrgovic.
