Austria strikes and France ends up suffering in the dramatic definition of Group D

Ralf Rangnick’s team surprises the Netherlands 3-2. The Gauls share the points against Poland.

The definition of Group D of the Euro Cup required the maintenance of two monitors. There was emotion to share. On the one hand, Austria achieved the feat and beat the Netherlands to win the lot. On the other hand, France, the big favorite, ended up suffering against Poland, with whom they drew 1-1. These results allowed the team led by Ralf Rangnick to accumulate six points, one more than Didier Deschamps. The oranges ended up with four and will be one of the best thirds.

An own goal from Donyell Malen in the 6th minute was the first sign of a happy day for the Austrians. Indeed, until the end of the first stage, they managed to reliably control their rivals and maintain the advantage.

Anxiety everywhere

The second period offered parallel emotions. On the one hand, the Netherlands obtained the equalizer, through Cody Gakpo, as soon as the match resumed, in the 47th minute. Austria reacted and took little time to regain the advantage. In the 59th minute, Romano Schmid scored.

In the other duel, a masked Kylian Mbappé stood behind the puck which marks the penalty shootout zone and beat Lukasz Skorupski, in the 56th minute, which responded to the favoritism generated by the Blues, despite the fact that at the football level, superiority was not so obvious. What has been confirmed, at least so far, is that France was on track to remain in the group, as the first projections indicated.

In the 75th minute there was a new move that only increased the excitement: Memphis Depay scored the provisional draw in the clash between the Netherlands and Austria, so it was still necessary once again start calculating. Four minutes later, the other match made its contribution: a difficult execution from Lewandowski equalized. Before celebrating, yes, the Barcelona striker had to suffer: his first shot was stopped by French goalkeeper Mike Maignan. However, the goalkeeper had visibly moved forward, so the shot was repeated. On the second occasion, the former Bayern Munich player did not forgive and condemned the 1-1 final in this match.

It’s time for the exploit

Almost at the same time, Austria celebrated its achievement. This was clarified by his captain, Marcel Sabitzer. In the 1980s, the Borussia Dortmund midfielder sent an unstoppable shot to Bart Verbruggen. It was a violent impact which hit the near post of the orange goalkeeper, who had no other choice but to resign himself to the ball crossing the penalty line.

The Netherlands is therefore condemned to third place. Even though he is certain that he will qualify as one of the best third-place finishers in the competition, he regretted a defeat that was not expected. In the meantime, the carnival began in Vienna and in all Austrian cities. The black and white team achieved an unforgettable victory and, above all, the three points that allowed them to continue the fight to become the best team in the Old Continent.
