Lunin to start pre-season with Real Madrid, Arsenal still in contention

Andrey wants to start training as soon as possible, but his future at the Madrid club is still in great question

Ukrainian goalkeeper Real Andrey Lunin informed the club that it plans to start pre-season training with him at the training base in Valdebebas. Moreover: the Ukrainian, who left Euro 2024 after the group stage, wants to start training before July 15, the official start date of the Blancos pre-season.

At the same time, against the backdrop of a still unsigned new contract and uncertainty about Andrei’s future in Madrid, he continues to remain on the London club’s list of transfer targets. Arsenal.

The Gunners are set to part ways with Aaron Ramsdale this summer and are keen to bring in a new goalkeeper to compete with David Raya. Espanyol’s Joan Garcia is reportedly Mikel Arteta’s favourite for the position, with the 25-year-old Ukrainian being considered as an alternative.

It was reported the day before that Lunin’s agent Jorge Mendes would arrive in Madrid this week to discuss the Ukrainian goalkeeper’s future with the club.

Real is interested in extending Andriy’s contract, the current term of which is calculated until the summer of 2025. Blancos continue to see the Ukrainian as a backup goalkeeper for Thibaut Courtois. At the same time, Lunin himself does not want to extend the current agreement, and his decision was influenced by Courtois’s appearance in the starting lineup for the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund (2:0), when the Belgian had just recovered from a long-term injury.

If Lunin does leave Real this summer, the main candidate to replace him is Porto and Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa. The problem with the transfer of the Portuguese goalkeeper may be his high release clause of 75 million euros.

In April, it was reported that Lunin had received offers from Manchester United, Bayern Munich and PSG (the Parisians were allegedly ready to pay 18 million euros for the goalkeeper).

Representatives of Atletico, Betis, Juventus, Aston Villa, the already mentioned Arsenal and Newcastle also contacted Real. The latter two were reportedly ready to pay 25 million euros for the Ukrainian. Manchester City is also considering the Ukrainian as an alternative to Ederson.

Lunin played 31 matches for Real in all tournaments in the 2023/24 season. The goalkeeper conceded 32 goals and kept 12 clean sheets.

Real Madrid won the Spanish title last season and triumphed in the Champions League.
