The Dragons came back from 0:3 and snatched victory in overtime
Duel for Portuguese Super Cup 2024 was marked by a luxurious plot and brought Porto a super-willed victory over Sporting — 4:3.
The Lions shocked their opponents with a strong start, scoring twice by the ninth minute. First, Pedro Gonçalves found the head of Gonçalo Inácio with a cross from a corner, and three minutes later he scored himself after a solo run by Victor Gyokeres.
The score became big midway through the half, with Gyokeres providing the second assist and 17-year-old winger Giovani Kenda scoring his debut goal in his first senior match.
Sporting’s newcomer, Belgian defender Zeno Debast, helped the opponent get back into the game – after his kick, Galeno found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper and calmly converted the opportunity.
The Dragons struck twice midway through the second half. Nico Gonzalez skillfully dealt with the encirclement of three defenders, and immediately Galeno scored a second, scoring from point-blank range after a cross from Stephen Eushtakiou.
Porto could have snatched a comeback victory in regulation time, but Vladan Kovacevic (another newcomer, former teammate of Ukrainian Vladislav Kochergin in Polish Rakow) inexplicably saved Fran Navarro’s shot from a few meters.
The denouement came in overtime. Ivan Jaime’s long-range shot was helped by a ricochet and landed behind the collar of the Bosnian goalkeeper.
It was the first match of the new Dragons coach in his independent career – and it immediately brought the trophy to the 41-year-old coach. PORTO won the Super Cup for the 24th time and leads in this indicator by a huge margin – Sporting and Benfica have 9 similar trophies each.
