Former coach of Spartak and Khimki Dmitri Gunko spoke about the transfer of the midfielder from the Russian national team Alexei Miranchuk to Atlanta United of MLS.
The deal with the 28-year-old runs until the end of the 2027 season with an option to extend for another year. Miranchuk has been playing for Italian side Atalanta since 2020 and won the Europa League with the team.
“I watched Atalanta, followed Gasperini, studied his system. Miranchuk was visible, absolutely all European specialists saw it, because Atalanta is the winner of the Europa League. This is an important club. Who will watch the MLS? In financial terms, Miranchuk probably won, but not everything is measured in money. My personal opinion is that Miranchuk did not develop as a footballer precisely because the stage of his career was Atalanta, with a complex system, a game structure that absolutely did not suit Alexey. He could reveal his potential and talent more clearly. “It was not a good decision,” Gunko said, quoted by RB Sport.
Last season, the Russian made 42 appearances for Atalanta, scoring four goals and providing 10 assists.
