Gazzaev, as a footballer, played for Spartak Ordzhonikidze (now Vladikavkaz Alania), SKA (Rostov-on-Don), Lokomotiv and Dynamo Moscow, as well as Dynamo Tbilisi. With the “blue and white” he won the USSR Cup in 1984. As a member of the USSR national team, Gazzaev twice won the European Youth Championship and became a bronze medalist at the Moscow Olympic Games. During his career, the striker scored more than 100 goals.
The first club in Gazzaev’s coaching career was Ordzhonikidze’s Spartak. Then came Dynamo Moscow, Alania (twice), CSKA, Dynamo kyiv, as well as Russian youth and first teams.
In 1995, Gazzaev led Alania to the first Russian championship victory in the club’s history. With CSKA, the specialist won the national championship three times, the Russian Cup four times, the Russian Super Cup twice and the UEFA Cup once in 2005. With Dynamo kyiv, Gazzaev won the Ukrainian Super Cup.
