The 32-year-old midfielder returned to his native club
Basel announced the signing of a contract with the former national team midfielder Switzerland Xherdan Shaqiri.
The parties entered into an agreement that runs until the summer of 2027.
Shaqiri is a product of Basel, whose colours he defended until 2012. He then played for Bayern, Inter, Stoke City, Liverpool and Lyon, and Xherdan’s last club was Chicago Fire from MLS, with whom his contract was terminated the day before yesterday, on August 14.
This summer, the 32-year-old midfielder took part in Euro 2024 (two matches, one goal), where the Swiss team reached the quarter-finals, losing to England only in a penalty shootout.
By scoring against Scotland in the second round, Shaqiri became the only European player to score in each of the last six major international tournaments.
On July 15, Xherdan announced his retirement from the national team. He played 125 matches for the national team (only Granit Xhaka has played more), scoring 32 goals and making 34 assists.
Basel is in seventh place in the standings after four rounds of the Swiss championship, with six points to its credit. It will play its next match on August 17 in the national cup against Zübingen.
