Van Dijk: I want to play in another World Cup. I know I’m still more than good

The defender’s first major tournament with the Netherlands national team was the 2022 World Cup in Qatar

Defender and Captain Netherlands national team Virgil van Dijk said he wanted to play on World Cup 2026.

“I want to play in another World Cup. I know I’m still more than good. I’m the captain of Liverpool, a consistent player and I feel great physically.”

Virgil van Dijk’s first major tournament with the Netherlands was the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where his team was eliminated in a dramatic penalty shootout at the quarter-final stage by eventual champions Argentina. The defender also played at Euro 2024, where the Netherlands reached the semi-finals, losing to England.

Van Dijk made his debut for the Netherlands national team in 2015, missing the successful 2014 World Cup in Brazil, which resulted in the Netherlands winning bronze medals. The Netherlands missed the 2018 World Cup, as well as Euro 2016. Virgil van Dijk missed the continental championship in 2020 due to injury.

The defender now has 75 matches and 9 goals for the Netherlands. Van Dijk helped them get off to a successful start in the Nations League, achieving a crushing home victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina yesterday (5:2).

The 2026 World Cup will be held in three countries – the United States, Mexico and Canada, and will last from June 11 to July 19, 2026. This World Cup will be the first in history in which 48 teams will play.
