Shevchenko: I thank Rebrov, under whose leadership we see progress in the results of the entire vertical of the national teams

The head of the UAF expressed full confidence and support for the coach of the national team, despite the disastrous results in September

President Ukrainian Football Association Andriy Shevchenko made an official address in which he summed up the spring performances of the Ukrainian national and youth teams.

“I would like to congratulate the Ukrainian youth team (U-21) on qualifying for the European Championship. Unai Melgosa’s team is showing a very good result in the group, winning all the matches.”

“I am grateful to Sergei Rebrov, under whose leadership we see progress in the work and results of the entire vertical of the national teams.”

“Ahead of us, in addition to the youth Euro, is the World Championship (U-20), where Dmitry Mykhailenko’s team has qualified. Together with the entry of the adult team to the Euro, we have a comprehensive success in the work of the coaching team, which is now working with our teams.”

“That is why we see prospects in the chosen vector of work and fully trust Sergey Rebrov. He has complete carte blanche to implement ideas and experiments.”

“Unsuccessful results at the start of the League of Nations will not change our strategy. The task of the UAF is to facilitate the achievement of the global goal – the national team’s entry into the World Cup. We are only at the start of a two-year cycle and are assessing the work of the national teams comprehensively. Serhiy Rebrov and his team have a lot of work ahead, and we continue to support him.”

Let us recall that the Ukrainian national team, led by Serhiy Rebrov, started with two defeats in Group B1 of the 2024/25 Nations League – to Albania (1:2) and the Czech Republic (2:3).

Rebrov has been the head coach of the blue-yellows since June 2023. Under his leadership, the national team has played 18 matches, winning eight, drawing five times and losing five. Under the current coach, the national team failed to qualify for Euro 2024 directly, but made it through the playoffs, and at the European Championship itself, it failed to make it out of the group with a record number of points (4).

In addition, since the end of January 2024, Rebrov has been one of three vice-presidents of the UAF, that is, Shevchenko’s deputy.

The youth team under the management of Unai Melgosa, playing the September matches of the Euro 2025 qualification in parallel with the national team, showed the opposite result. Two more victories (over Serbia and Northern Ireland, both with a score of 2:1) allowed the U-21 team to secure an early ticket to the European Youth Championship.
