Mircea Lucescu to undergo hip surgery in Kyiv

Romania national team coach pleased with how similar operation went in 2023

Head coach Romanian national team Mircea Lucescu will be operated on for the second time in two years Kyiv.

The 79-year-old coach will undergo hip surgery again, as he did in May 2023. Only this time, the specialist’s right hip requires surgical intervention, while 15 months ago Mircea had surgery on his left hip joint due to coxarthrosis (a disease of the cartilage tissue).

Lucescu was reportedly planning to undergo surgery in early autumn, but postponed his plans due to the League of Nations matches in September. At the same time, the Romanian specialist himself made a choice in favor of the capital of Ukraine, being satisfied with how his previous surgery went, when he was still the head coach of Dynamo Kyiv.

It should be noted that already the next day after the surgery, Mircea held a theoretical lesson at the Kiev base, and by the end of the month he had fully returned to Dynamo.

Lucescu’s coaching career has been going on for 47 years. From 2004 to 2016, the Romanian headed Shakhtar. With the Miners, the specialist won 22 trophies, including becoming the champion of Ukraine 8 times.

From the summer of 2020 to November 2023, Mircea worked as the head of Dynamo, and in the first season under the leadership of the Romanian, the Kiev team became the champion of Ukraine, and also won the Cup and Super Cup of Ukraine.

The Romanian national team, led by a highly experienced coach, started LN-2024 with a bang, making a strong bid to return to Division B. Lucescu’s team achieved confident victories over Kosovo (3:0) and Lithuania (3:1). The Cyprus national team is also in the same quartet with the Romanians.
