8 Ajax fans arrested for rioting during protest against police strike

Fans were unhappy with the cancellation of two consecutive matches involving their team

IN Amsterdam riots occurred as a result of protests involving Ajax fans. Fans of the Dutch giants protested against the police union strike.

The protesters reportedly attacked a police station, damaging several cars and the building itself. The fans also attacked trams, used explosives, and threatened the safety of passersby and public transport passengers. City services had to resort to the help of special forces. Eight people were arrested as a result of the riots.

The police and the municipality of Amsterdam have strongly condemned the actions of fans who are unhappy with the cancellation of matches involving their team. The club also stated that it does not support the fans’ actions.

As a reminder, the police strike led to the postponement of two consecutive Ajax matches in the Eredivisie – away against Feyenoord (September 1) and Utrecht in Amsterdam (September 15).

Since early May, Dutch police have been protesting by refusing to issue fines for minor violations. This is costing the state treasury 1.5 million euros a week. In recent weeks, their strikes have reached a new level. The officers are demanding a permanent early retirement and are prepared to take tougher measures if their demands are not met.

Ajax played only two matches in the 2024/25 Eredivisie: they beat Heerenveen (1:0) and lost to Breda (1:2).
