Marchenko: I didn’t expect anything special from the first match after the operation. It’s still a long way to any good level

Ilya had his first fight since mid-July

Former number one tennis player of Ukraine and new captain of the Ukrainian women’s tennis team Ilya Marchenko spoke about his return to the court and his first match after knee surgery.

“I didn’t expect anything special from the first match. I don’t move well, I’m not in the best physical shape. Today I was catastrophically lacking in concentration. But overall there were some positive moments: I served well, I held on for quite a long time in the second set. But, of course, I’m still very far from any good level,” Marchenko said.

Today Marchenko suffered a defeat at the start of the ATP Challenger Tour 100 tournament in Nonthaburi (Thailand). The 37-year-old Ukrainian lost to the “neutral” Aslan Karatsev – 1:6, 4:6. Ilya’s winless streak now totals six matches.

The fight with Karatsev was Ilya’s first since July 14. Let us recall that Marchenko underwent knee surgery at the end of July.
