The Australian is unlikely to be able to postpone this fight for a more attractive fight
Undefeated Australian boxer Jay Opetaya (26-0, 20 KOs), who recently defended his champion title IBF cruiserweight title, received a new mandatory challenger from International Boxing Federation – German Hussein Jinkar (22-0, 18 KOs).
Both sides have been ordered by the sanctioning body to begin negotiations for a mandatory title fight. At the same time, Opetaya would like to consider more attractive options – for example, a fight with the winner of the Gilberto Ramirez – Chris Billham-Smith fight for unifying the cruiserweight belts.
However, it is unlikely that the Australian can count on another postponement. In December 2023, we recall, Jay was forced to forfeit the IBF title, previously won in a fight with Mairis Briedis, due to the fact that he preferred a fight against Ellis Zorro to a fight with the mandatory challenger.
To regain the IBF championship belt, Opetaye had to fight Briedis again – which he successfully did in May of this year. However, instead of a mandatory defense, the Australian boxer chose a fight against John Massey, who won by technical knockout last week.
39-year-old Jinkara won the right to fight Opetaia in April, knocking out Armend Hoxhai in an IBF eliminator fight.
