Gutzeit: To date, about 500 of our athletes and coaches have died in the war with Russia

The head of the NOC also spoke about the arenas that suffered from Russian aggression

President National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine Vadim Gutzeit spoke about the losses among Ukrainian athletes due to the Russian invasion.

“These numbers change every day. But currently, about 500 of our athletes and coaches have died in the Russian-Ukrainian war. And more than 3,000 representatives of the sports industry have already left to defend Ukraine.”

“Many sports facilities are now located in the occupied territories. For example, the Olympic base in occupied Kreminna (Luhansk region). In Mariupol (Donetsk region) they planned to open a reconstructed swimming pool, but due to the outbreak of a large-scale invasion they did not have time. Olympic, 50-meter. “In Kharkov, due to shelling, the swimming pool where our synchronized swimmers trained was destroyed. It has now been partially restored. In general, there are over 500 sports facilities that were destroyed or very badly damaged.”

Early in the morning of February 24, 2022, Russia launched rocket and air bombardments of most Ukrainian cities, and then launched a full-scale military invasion. The Russian war against Ukraine has continued for the 970th day.
