FIFA approves human rights report on Saudi Arabia’s bid to host 2034 World Cup

The Arab Kingdom will be the only contender to host the World Cup

FIFA approved the human rights report on the application Saudi Arabia to conduct World Cup 2034.

The report was prepared by FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström. Saudi Arabia received a rating of 4.2 out of 5 in it, meaning any potential obstacles to the candidate will be cleared before they are officially confirmed as hosts at the FIFA Congress on December 11.

According to FIFA, the ranking was not based on the “overall human rights context” in Saudi Arabia, but on how the country would “view the human rights situation related to the tournament.” These measures included labor rights for migrant workers, children’s rights, gender rights, disability rights and press freedom.

Saudi Arabia is the only candidate to host the World Cup in 2034. It was previously reported that Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, together with Australia, as well as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, were planning to make a joint application, but these plans did not materialize.

The Kingdom will become the second state of the Arabian Peninsula to host the World Cup. In 2022, the World Cup was held in Qatar.
