CAS rejects Cardiff City’s appeal over transfer fee for Sala, who died in plane crash

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has rejected an appeal brought by Cardiff against the French club Nantes to pay the first installment of the transfer of the Argentine footballer Emiliano Sala who died in a plane crash.

Previously, the British club had been ordered to pay a first installment of six million euros. The CAS procedure only concerned the first installment of the total transfer amount of 17 million euros.

“After taking into account all the evidence presented and all the arguments put forward by both clubs, the CAS panel has recognized the player’s transfer from Nantes FC to Cardiff City FC as complete,” the CAS decision reads. – As the conditions set out in the transfer agreement were met before the player’s death, FC Nantes’ request for the first installment of a transfer fee of six million euros has been accepted.

Sala moved to “Cardiff” of Nantes for 17 million pounds. He flew to the location of the new team, but the plane he was in disappeared from radar on the night of January 22, 2019. On February 3, a crashed plane was found at the bottom of the Channel and Sala’s body was found among the wreckage. Pilot Ibbotson’s body was never found.
