Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc finished fifth and seventh respectively in qualifying for the Mexican Grand Prix. Ferrari racers are unhappy with the car’s competitiveness, but Charles Leclerc in particular, who lacked speed on the straights, complained strongly.
Monegask is sure the problem has to do with the power plant, but team leader Mattia Binotto, on Italian Sky’s skies, said Charles’s DRS system was not working.
Carlos Sainz (5th): “The car was difficult to control over curbs and bumps, making it difficult to put in a fast lap. If I succeeded in this we could claim a top three place in terms of speed, but, as I said, the car was difficult to drive. What is, what is – even before the start of the weekend we knew we had to compromise on this track, so I can’t say I’m very disappointed.
We know why we lack speed. We know what this is about, but it turned out to be harder to fly than I expected, and harder compared to other weekends. We need to understand what it’s about.”
Charles Leclerc (7th): “You have to study telemetry to understand why I lost so much time on the straights. The problems started already in the third practice – on Saturday we had a lot of problems with the bike for various reasons. We need to understand what it’s about.
The car accelerated very badly and did not respond to pressing the accelerator pedal the way I wanted. I was too slow on the straights because of that. I don’t think this is due to the high altitude – the problem is something else.
Now I don’t know how competitive we will be in the race – we need to talk to the team. Since we can’t change the car, I don’t know what we can do before the race.”
