Williams drivers Alex Albon and Nicholas Latifi completed the qualifying protocol for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The team explained these results by the fact that they were unable to warm up the tires due to traffic.
Alex Albon (19th): “After the third practice we looked quite confident and the car was fast. In qualifying, the temperature of the track dropped, necessitating faster passage of the exit circles from the pits, but this was not possible due to heavy traffic.
I passed seven or eight cars on the pit lap, but the tires weren’t ready yet. By turn six, the tires had reached their working range, but by then a lot of time had already been lost. The gaps are minimal, so I think I could get into the second part.
Fortunately, today is not the situation where we puzzle and try to find an explanation for the lack of pace. Traffic makes it difficult, I’m a little frustrated, but I’m looking forward to the race.”
Nicholas Latifi (20th): “I’m pretty happy with the last lap in qualifying. It wasn’t perfect, but fairly clean. We had no speed today. I’m sure I squeezed everything out of the tires. Not in this position I wanted to finish my last qualification, but I am satisfied. The hardest part was choosing the right location on the track at the exit circle from the pits.
Tomorrow will be difficult, but my last race is coming up and I will try to enjoy it.”
